Super bulky and chunky yarn works up fast, with big, visible stitches that make cozy blankets, warm scarves, and statement homeware in a fraction of the time of a fine yarn. The Estako lines below are all CYCA weight 5 (Bulky) or 6 (Super Bulky), and every one is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified.
For plush texture, Velvet and the even thicker Velvet XL are soft chenille super bulkies, while Cozy is a smooth super bulky for cables and warm garments. Softy and Megastar sit at the bulky-chunky end for pullovers and quick accessories, and Fur adds a fluffy super bulky for trims and texture.
New to thick yarn? Our super bulky yarn guide covers projects and hooks, the Velvet chenille comparison looks at how it stacks up, and the how much yarn do I need guide turns a pattern into a real ball count.
Common questions
What hook or needle size do these take?
Straight from each ball band:
- Velvet, CYCA #6: 4.5 mm hook (US 7), 6.5 mm needle (US 10.5)
- Velvet XL, CYCA #6: 9 mm hook (US M/N-13), 8 to 9 mm needle (US 11 to 13)
- Cozy, CYCA #6: 8 to 10 mm hook (US L-11 to N/P-15), 9 to 10 mm needle (US 13 to 15)
- Fur, CYCA #6: 7 to 9 mm hook (US L-11 to N/P-15), 8 to 10 mm needle (US 11 to 15)
- Megastar, CYCA #5: 7 to 8 mm hook (US K-10.5 to L-11), 8 to 10 mm needle (US 11 to 15)
- Softy, CYCA #5: 4 to 5 mm hook (US G-6 to H-8), 6 to 7 mm needle (US 10 to 10.5)
Velvet is the one that surprises people. It is a CYCA #6 yarn that works on a 4.5 mm hook, because chenille is a soft pile strand rather than a thick plied one. If you pick a 9 mm hook for Velvet because the label says super bulky, the fabric will come out loose and gappy.
How many skeins do I need for a throw?
For a 50 x 60 in throw, at each yarn's own gauge:
- Fur, 71 yds / 100 g: 8 to 12 skeins
- Softy, 98 yds / 100 g: 10 to 14 skeins
- Cozy, 65 yds / 100 g: 10 to 16 skeins
- Velvet, 132 yds / 100 g: 12 to 16 skeins
- Velvet XL, 55 yds / 100 g: 13 to 16 skeins
- Megastar, 120 yds / 100 g: 14 to 18 skeins
Order the whole amount in one dye lot. For other sizes, our yarn calculator works from your own measurements.
What is the difference between #5 bulky and #6 super bulky here?
CYCA #6 Super Bulky covers Velvet, Velvet XL, Cozy and Fur. CYCA #5 Bulky covers Megastar and Softy. In practice the gap shows up in gauge and in how fast a project closes: Cozy knits at 10 stitches to 10 cm, Megastar at 13.
Within the #6 group the yarns still behave very differently. Velvet XL is the thickest strand at 55 yds per 100 g. Velvet carries 132 yds in the same 100 g, so it is much finer despite sharing the weight class. Cozy is a smooth 80% acrylic and 20% wool blend that holds cables. Fur is a faux fur novelty for trims and texture rather than a whole garment.
Can I machine wash chenille and faux fur?
Yes, cold and gentle, but the finishing steps differ:
- Velvet and Velvet XL: cold, gentle cycle, lay flat to dry. Do not iron directly. A light brush restores the plush pile after washing.
- Softy: cold wash, tumble dry low. Do not iron directly.
- Fur: cold, gentle cycle inside a laundry bag to protect the pile, then lay flat. Skip the dryer and the iron, because low heat flattens faux fur permanently. A light finger-fluff once dry brings it back.
- Cozy and Megastar: these are wool blends, so cold, gentle cycle and lay flat to dry. Do not iron directly.
