Common questions

How many skeins do I need for a baby blanket?

For a standard 36 x 52 in baby blanket, worked at each yarn's own published gauge:

  • Cotton Life, 361 yds / 100 g: 4 to 5 skeins
  • Downy, 267 yds / 100 g: 5 skeins
  • Velvet, 132 yds / 100 g: 6 to 9 skeins
  • Softy, 98 yds / 100 g: 6 to 9 skeins
  • Happy Cotton, 180 yds / 50 g: 7 to 9 skeins
  • Cozy, 65 yds / 100 g: 7 to 10 skeins

Buy one extra skein in the same dye lot if you can, so a re-order still matches. For any other size, our yarn calculator works it out from your measurements.

Which weight should I choose for a baby project?

It depends on whether you want a light layer or a thick one. Cotton Life and Happy Cotton are CYCA #2 Fine / Sport for lightweight cardigans, bonnets and summer blankets. Downy is CYCA #3 Light / DK, a middle ground with a soft fuzzy surface. Softy is CYCA #5 Bulky. Velvet and Cozy are CYCA #6 Super Bulky and finish a blanket fastest.

Velvet and Softy are chenille, so they give plush texture and drape. Cotton Life and Happy Cotton are cotton blends and breathe better in warm weather.

Is it machine washable?

All six wash by machine, though the details differ and they matter for something that gets washed weekly:

  • Velvet and Softy (both chenille): cold, gentle cycle. Do not iron directly. A light brush restores the pile after washing. Softy can tumble dry low; Velvet lays flat.
  • Downy: cold, gentle cycle, lay flat. The anti-pilling blend keeps stitches looking clean through repeated washing.
  • Cozy: this is a wool blend, so cold, gentle cycle and lay flat to dry. Do not iron directly.
  • Happy Cotton: cold, gentle cycle, lay flat.
  • Cotton Life: cold, gentle cycle or hand wash. Do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not iron. Lay flat so garments keep their shape.
